What is the blue MSC ecolabel?

The blue MSC ecolabel is the world’s most recognised label for sustainable seafood. It is found on retail products and in restaurants identifying fish and seafood that have been caught in a sustainable way. The ecolabel is only awarded to well-managed fisheries that meet the MSC’s independently verified Standard for sustainable fishing.

This year for our annual MSC UK Awards we are asking you to vote for your favourite MSC certified product! Cast your vote and enter for a chance to win one of our exciting prizes!

With addition of silver smelt within Birds Eye Fish species portfolio we support species diversification as we recognize the importance encouraging consumers using in their daily repertoire broader range of fish species and making it a bit easier to make sustainable choices.

Wiley’s Finest Wild Alaskan Fish Oil, Peak EPA

Our bestseller, Peak EPA is for heart, vision and brain health. It contains 1000mg of EPA and DHA per convenient softgel capsule, making it four times more potent than regular fish oils.

In 2020, the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) released its comprehensive TOTOX study that showed Wiley’s Finest is the market leader with the lowest TOTOX score (oxidation of fish oils). This shows Wiley’s Finest position as providing the freshest of fish oils.

Peak EPA is purified and concentrated to provide a Peak dose of EPA in every softgel. Peak EPA is clinically proven to increase Omega-3 levels in human muscle tissue and red blood cells. Concentrated Wild Alaskan Fish Oil made at Wiley’s Finest’s family owned and operated cGMP Refinery in the US. Each softgel contains 750mg EPA, 250mg DHA for a total of 1000mg EPA + DHA.

Sustainability credentials:

We specialise in ethical practices and strict adherence to conservation. Nearly 30 years ago, the Wiley family made sustainability a key factor before it even became a recognised issue. All our fish oil is sustainably sourced from Wild Alaskan Pollock.

Traceability throughout the supply chain is essential to us. Alaska leads the world in sustainable seafood practices. It’s considered the most well-managed large-scale fishery in the world. We can trace the origin of our oil right down to the boat on which it was caught on. The majority of oil is extracted at source. Within three hours of the wild Alaskan Pollock being caught it is filleted for human consumption and the first part of oil extracted from the heads and livers.

Independent studies show we have less than 1% bycatch. We have cameras on our nets to look out for sea life that have been mistakenly caught so we can quickly set it free. We are transparent about our process almost to a fault.

Our carton-free products are packaged in recyclable glass bottles.

The Good Tide Seafood Company Anchovy Fillets. Simply Marinated.

Our anchovies come from the Cantabrian Sea –south of the Bay of Biscay, which is famous for the quality of its anchovies. The fillets are much larger than you see with non MSC varieties and being marinated in oil, maintain a softer, more complex texture and flavour than traditionally salted alternatives. Marinated anchovies are well known in Spanish cuisine as Boquerones and are fantastic for casual food occasions, providing a hit of omega -3 with amazing flavour and a clear conscience.

Sustainability credentials:

Anchovies are a keystone species in the food chain, which means that many other species depend on them as a food source. So, it is vital that if you’re buying and eating anchovies, that you buy something responsibly fished.

Our anchovies are caught in the Cantabrian Sea in Europe’s first MSC certified anchovy fishery, using purse seine nets – an artisanal fishing method, which is the preferred technique for capturing fish species, such as anchovy, which school or aggregate close to the surface. Most fish are caught between March and June.

Cornish MSC sardines are a jewel of the Cornish coast. A sustainable British seafood choice. Cornish sardines, traditionally known as pilchards, are caught in inshore waters by ring netters – a net encircles the fish and then draws the fish into the boat and held in ice.
Our four ring netters fish for MSC sardines in Mounts Bay in Cornwall. Fish are landed at Newlyn and taken by our trucks to our factory – a truly vertical supply chain.

Most of these sardines are destined for the continent and we wanted to change that, even if in a small way. We promote our MSC sardines on social media and nationwide events. We work with the MSC on promotion through social media campaigns, exhibitions and in marketing videos. Working with the MSC ensures a sustainable fishery not just for today but for the future.
